The International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences & Research (IIRS) became operational on 3rd December 2006. It is a philanthropic institution aiming at delivering Rehabilitation Services in Speech and Audiology. The institute harnesses the expertise and experience of a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team, adept in Audiology, Speech Language Pathology and Physiotherapy, to offer a wide range of services like assessing and rehabilitating individuals suffering from Neuro-Language and Speech disorders, hearing disabilities, Psychological disorders due to Speech and Hearing impairments. IIRS is currently funded by Multi-Cooperative society.

There is need for educational institutes to bring out qualified professionals in the field of disability & rehabilitation, particularly in Speech and Hearing. The number of people affected with permanent disability in India is growing. According to 2011 census, the total number of persons with disability (Divyang) in the country constituted 2.1% of total population and the number is steadily growing. Initiations that increase resources which can help them integrate into society and be productive, are therefore the top priority of the Government of India. International Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences & Research (IIRS & R) has its mission to address this aspect through clinical services and education. Located in the cultural city of Bhubaneswar it is striving to be a nodal center for professional training in speech and hearing with excellence.

IIRS & R is a unit of AASTHA Charitable Trust. This trust has promoted IIRS & R with a noble intention of providing clinical services and spreading education in allied health science & rehabilitation sector. The institute is established with aims and objectives to conduct and coordinate – research, training and services that would lead to successful rehabilitation of individual with Divyang. The major activities of IIRS & R are human resource development, research, rehabilitation service, material development and information documentation.

IIRS & R was started to conduct BASLP (Bachelor in Audiology & Speech – Language pathology) course in Bhubaneswar. The Institute has a service component i.e., rendering services to Divyang (Speech and Hearing) and training component where degree in Speech & Hearing is offered. This course is affiliated to Utkal University and is conducting the program for the past 12 years. All the passed out graduates are appointed in Government & Non-Government health care services. The absorption rate into job sector of our graduates are among highest in the field.

Aastha Charitable trust promoted education in communication disorders in Bhubaneswar as the city as established itself as an educational hub in Eastern India.IIRS & R is recognized by Govt. of ODISHA, approved by Rehabilitation Council of India, New Delhi, and affiliated to Utkal University.

The institute is located at plot no. 196/2276, Khandagiri, behind Xavier’s High School, Bhubaneswar which is a prime location in the capital city of Odisha. IIRS & R has necessary infrastructure like classrooms, clinics, state of the art Hearing Sciences /Audiology Evaluation Room, Ear Mold Lab, Speech Science Lab and Library, all housed with equipment essential for running the rehabilitation courses.

It has its own governing body consisting of Doctors, Audiologist and Speech Language Pathologist, Eminent Educationist, Technocraft and Bureaucrats. An advisory committee has also been formed to guide and upgrade matters related to rehabilitative and technical improvement as well as on its functioning from time to time.

The institute is equipped with a multi diagnostic and therapeutic clinic for Audiology and Speech Language Pathology, a modern preschool for children with special needs. This institute also has a pool of eminent, experienced, motivated, specialized professionals and faculty to meet the needs of training programs and other activities. The academic staff have participated in conferences world-wide and presented scientific papers.
